Commonly Overlooked Conditions

Conditions Veterans Don't Realize They Can Claim

Many veterans leave compensation on the table because they don't know these conditions qualify for VA disability ratings.

Mental Health Conditions

😰 Anxiety Disorder (NOS)

Why overlooked: Veterans think only PTSD qualifies. Any anxiety disorder caused or worsened by service counts.

Typical rating: 30% - 70%

😔 Adjustment Disorder

What it is: Emotional/behavioral symptoms in response to identifiable stressors during or after service.

Why overlooked: Often dismissed as "just stress" but is a diagnosable, ratable condition.

Typical rating: 10% - 50%

ðŸ˜ī Insomnia / Sleep Disturbance

What it is: Chronic difficulty sleeping, often secondary to PTSD, anxiety, pain, or tinnitus.

Why overlooked: Veterans see it as a symptom, not a standalone claimable condition.

Typical rating: 0% - 30% (often rated under mental health umbrella)

🍚 Substance Use Disorder (Secondary)

Why overlooked: Cannot be claimed as primary, but CAN be rated as secondary to PTSD or depression.

Typical rating: Rated under the primary MH condition

Typical rating: 10% - 50%

ðŸĪ• Traumatic Brain Injury (Mild TBI)

What it is: Concussion or blast exposure causing headaches, memory problems, and cognitive issues.

Why overlooked: "Mild" TBI sounds minor but can produce significant, ratable residual symptoms.

Typical rating: 10% - 70% (plus separate ratings for residuals)

Musculoskeletal Conditions

ðŸĶķ Flat Feet (Pes Planus)

What it is: Fallen arches aggravated by marching, running, and heavy loads in service.

Typical rating: 10% - 50% (bilateral)

ðŸĶĩ Knee Instability (Separate from ROM)

What it is: Knee giving way, requiring a brace — rated separately from range of motion limitation.

Why overlooked: Veterans don't know you can get two separate ratings for the same knee.

Typical rating: 10% - 30% (on top of ROM rating)

🔧 Cervical Strain (Neck Pain)

What it is: Chronic neck pain from helmet wear, vehicle vibration, or carrying heavy loads.

Typical rating: 0% - 50%

🌎ïļ Asthma (New Onset)

What it is: Asthma developed during or after service from dust, burn pits, chemicals.

Why overlooked: Veterans think asthma is always pre-existing. New-onset asthma is very claimable.

Typical rating: 10% - 100%

ðŸ”Ĩ Constrictive Bronchiolitis

What it is: Scarring of small airways from burn pit / toxic exposure — requires surgical lung biopsy to confirm.

Typical rating: 30% - 100%

Gastrointestinal Conditions

Typical rating: 0% - 20%
