What Happens
After filing, the VA will likely schedule a C&P (Compensation & Pension) exam. This is where an examiner evaluates your condition and provides a medical opinion to the VA.
Timeline
- Usually scheduled 2-6 weeks after filing
- You'll receive a letter or call with the date/time
- If you can't make it, RESCHEDULE — don't just skip it
Before the Exam
- Review our C&P Exam Prep guides for your specific condition
- Re-read your personal statement so your answers are consistent
- Review the DBQ (Disability Benefits Questionnaire) for your condition
- Prepare to describe your WORST days
- Bring a list of all medications and their side effects
- Consider bringing your spouse or someone who witnesses your condition daily
During the Exam
- Be honest — don't exaggerate or minimize
- Stop at pain during range of motion testing
- Describe functional limitations with specific examples
- The examiner is reporting to the VA, not treating you
After the Exam
- The examiner sends their report to the VA
- The VA rater makes the final decision on your rating
- You'll receive a decision letter (usually 1-3 months after the exam)
- If you disagree, you have options: Supplemental Claim, Higher Level Review, or Board Appeal
