Degenerative arthritis is most commonly rated at 10% per major joint or group of minor joints. Each affected joint can be rated separately. X-ray evidence showing arthritis is required.

Pro Tip: Arthritis is rated by limitation of motion OR by X-ray evidence with painful motion. Even if your range of motion is normal, if you have arthritis on X-ray and pain with movement, you qualify for 10% per joint.
Rating Criteria

20% With X-ray evidence of involvement of 2 or more major joints or 2 or more minor joint groups, with occasional incapacitating exacerbations

Conditions Secondary to This

5 links
Major depressive disorder
9434
Strong

Chronic joint pain and reduced mobility commonly lead to depression

Generalized anxiety disorder
9400
Moderate

Fear of worsening condition and loss of function causes anxiety

Median nerve, paralysis
8515
Moderate

Arthritis in wrist joints can compress the median nerve

Sciatic nerve, paralysis
8520
Moderate

Spinal arthritis can compress nerves causing radiculopathy

Sleep Apnea Syndromes
6847
Moderate

Reduced mobility leads to weight gain, a primary sleep apnea risk factor

This May Be Secondary To

15 links
Flatfoot, acquired
DC 5276
Strong

Flat feet alter biomechanics and increase stress on knee, hip, and ankle joints, accelerating arthritis.

Gout
DC 5017
Strong

Gout leads to joint damage and degenerative changes

Knee, other impairment
DC 5257
Strong

Prior knee injury is a leading cause of post-traumatic arthritis.

Leg, limitation of extension
DC 5261
Strong

Chronic knee dysfunction can lead to degenerative arthritis over time.

Leg, limitation of flexion
DC 5260
Strong

Chronic knee dysfunction can accelerate degenerative arthritis.

Lupus erythematosus
DC 6350
Strong

Lupus causes joint inflammation and arthritis as one of its primary symptoms.

Lyme disease
DC 6319
Strong

Lyme disease causes Lyme arthritis โ€” inflammatory joint disease that can persist even after antibiotic treatment.

Thigh, limitation of flexion
DC 5252
Strong

Altered gait from hip conditions causes compensatory stress on the opposite hip, knees, and ankles, accelerating arthritis.

Bursitis
DC 5019
Moderate

Chronic bursitis can accelerate joint degeneration

Colitis, ulcerative
DC 7323
Moderate

IBD medications (corticosteroids) and the inflammatory process itself can trigger arthritis and joint pain.

Crohn's disease or undifferentiated form of inflammatory bowel disease
DC 7326
Moderate

Crohn's disease and its treatment with corticosteroids can trigger arthritis and joint inflammation.

Hallux valgus
DC 5280
Moderate

Bunions alter gait mechanics and foot biomechanics, contributing to arthritis in the foot, ankle, and knee.

Hypothyroidism
DC 7903
Moderate

Hypothyroidism contributes to joint pain and arthritis through metabolic changes, fluid retention, and reduced tissue repair.

Uterus and both ovaries, removal
DC 7617
Moderate

Sudden estrogen loss accelerates bone density loss and joint degeneration, leading to osteoarthritis.

Uterus, removal
DC 7618
Moderate

Estrogen loss after hysterectomy accelerates osteoarthritis and joint degeneration.
